Verse 2 — Afflictions to Venus and Traditional Indications Concerning the Wife
When malefic planets occupy the fourth and eighth positions from Venus, or
when Venus is situated between two malefics, or when Venus is neither
associated with nor aspected by benefic planets, the text describes adverse
outcomes concerning the wife, symbolically associating them with death by fire,
a fall, or a noose, respectively.
These are traditional astrological claims, not reliable predictions of a
spouse's death or its cause.
1. Malefics in the fourth and eighth positions from Venus
The expression ugragrahaiḥ refers to fierce or malefic planets,
while sita is Venus, also called Bhṛgutanaya—the son of Bhṛgu.
The expression caturasra can refer to a square relationship. In this
context, it is interpreted as the fourth and eighth positions from Venus.
Under this reading, malefics occupying the fourth and eighth positions from
Venus indicate a severe affliction to the marital significator.
The text associates this configuration with dahana—burning or fire.
Technical distinction: The
fourth and eighth positions from Venus are being considered here, not
necessarily the fourth and eighth houses from the Ascendant.
2. Venus situated between two malefics
The expression madhyasthite bhṛgutanaye athavā ugrayoḥ describes
Venus positioned between two fierce or malefic planets.
This is commonly understood as a form of Pāpa Kartarī, in which
malefics flank a planet.
The traditional interpretation associates this configuration with nipāta,
meaning a fall or downfall.
The underlying principle is that Venus, the significator of marriage and
marital happiness, is hemmed in by malefic influences.
However, the precise construction of the first line is compressed. The
association of this clause with a fall follows the supplied translation and
should be checked against the original commentary before being treated as
definitive.
3. Venus without benefic association or aspect
The second line includes:
saumyagrahair asahita-saṃnirīkṣite
- Saumya-graha — a benefic planet.
- Asahita — unassociated or not joined.
- Saṃnirīkṣita — viewed or aspected.
The interpretation understands this as Venus being neither joined by nor
aspected by benefic planets.
The text associates this condition with pāśa, a noose or cord.
This is another severe traditional indication, but the absence of benefic
influence should not automatically be equated with a literal death prediction.
The broader horoscope, the condition of the seventh house and its lord, and
other relevant factors would need to be considered within the tradition's own
framework.

Classical Principle
The verse treats Venus as the principal reference point for assessing
marital affliction. It distinguishes three conditions: malefics in specified
positions from Venus, Venus hemmed between malefics, and Venus lacking benefic
association or aspect.
The essential interpretive caution is to distinguish the text's literal
language from its broader astrological principle. These combinations describe severe affliction to
the marital significator in the classical scheme; they do not establish that a
spouse will die by fire, a fall, or hanging.
