Sambandha: Four Fundamental Ways Planets Become Connected
The word Sambandha simply means relationship or
connection. In predictive astrology, it tells us that the significations of
two planets or the houses they represent are no longer operating independently;
they have been brought into a common field of operation.
The relationship can arise in different ways. The important
point is to understand how the connection is created.
1. Conjunction — Sharing the Same Field
When two planets occupy the same sign or house, they
are placed together in the same field of experience.
For example, if the 5th lord and 10th lord are
together in the 10th house, the affairs of the 5th and 10th houses become
connected and may manifest through the 10th house.
Think of conjunction as:
“Two planets are living in the same place.”
They therefore interact directly. The degree-wise
proximity of the planets can further modify the intensity of their
interaction, but the basic sambandha arises from their occupying the same
field.
2. Parivartana — Entering Each Other's Domain
Parivartana or sign exchange is an even more intimate
relationship.
Suppose:
- Planet
A occupies Planet B's sign, and
- Planet
B occupies Planet A's sign.
Each planet has therefore entered the other's territory.
For example, if Mars is in Venus's sign and Venus is in
Mars's sign, neither planet is functioning independently of the other. Mars
operates through Venus's domain, while Venus operates through Mars's domain.
Think of Parivartana as:
“Each planet is living in the other's house.”
Consequently, the houses owned by the two planets become
strongly interconnected, and their significations tend to operate together.
3. Mutual Aspect — Looking Directly at Each Other
In mutual aspect, the planets remain in their
respective signs and houses, but each directly influences the other.
Planet A aspects Planet B, and Planet B aspects Planet A.
Think of it as:
“They live separately, but they are looking directly at
each other.”
The planets therefore establish a two-way channel of
influence.
This is different from conjunction and exchange:
- Conjunction:
they share the same field.
- Exchange:
they occupy each other's domains.
- Mutual
aspect: they remain apart but directly influence one another.
The mechanism differs, but the result is the same
fundamental principle: Sambandha.
4. Dispositor Sambandha — Operating Through Another
Planet
This is one of the most important relationships and is
frequently underestimated.
A planet gives its results through the sign in which it
is placed. The lord of that sign is its dispositor.
For example, if Mars is placed in Sagittarius, Mars
is operating in Jupiter's sign. Jupiter therefore becomes the dispositor of
Mars.
Think of it as:
“Mars is working in Jupiter's territory and therefore has
to function through Jupiter.”
This creates a connection even though Mars and Jupiter may
not occupy the same house or directly aspect one another.
Now suppose Jupiter also aspects Mars. The relationship
becomes still stronger:
Mars is in Jupiter's domain + Jupiter directly influences
Mars.
The dispositor thus becomes an important channel through
which the planet's results are delivered.

The essential principle is:
Sambandha does not mean that every relationship is
identical. It means that two planets have become sufficiently connected for
their significations to interact. The nature, strength and mechanism of that
connection determine how the relationship will ultimately manifest.
And this is why Sambandha should be established before
interpreting a Yoga. Merely finding two house lords in favourable positions
is not enough. We must first establish how they are connected, how
strong that connection is, and whether the planets involved are capable of
delivering the promised results.
