The Hidden Astrological Logic of the Yoga
The verse specifies the following placements:
|
Planet |
House |
|
Saturn |
8th |
|
Mars |
6th |
|
Sun |
2nd |
|
Moon |
12th |
At first glance, these appear to be isolated placements.
However, when viewed through the principles of planetary dṛṣṭi (aspects), a
striking symmetry emerges.
1. Saturn in the Eighth Aspects the Sun in the Second
Saturn possesses its normal 7th aspect, and from the 8th
house it falls directly upon the 2nd house, where the Sun is placed.
This is highly significant because:
- The Sun
is the natural significator (kāraka) of eyesight (cakṣuḥ).
- The 2nd
house governs the face and the right eye in classical astrology.
- Saturn
is a natural malefic associated with obstruction, degeneration, darkness,
deficiency, and loss of vitality.
Thus, Saturn does not merely occupy the eighth house of
chronic disease; it directly afflicts both the house of the eye and its natural
significator. The result is a chronic, degenerative affliction of vision.
2. Mars in the Sixth Aspects the Moon in the Twelfth
Mars has a special 7th aspect, and from the 6th
house it falls directly upon the 12th house, where the Moon resides.
Here again, the symbolism is precise.
The sixth house signifies:
- Disease
- Injury
- Inflammation
- Trauma
Mars signifies:
- Heat
- Wounds
- Surgical
intervention
- Immunity
The twelfth house is traditionally associated with:
- The
left eye
- Loss
- Hospitalization
- Expenditure
of vitality
The Moon governs:
- Bodily
fluids
- Nourishment
- Sensory
perception
- The
delicate tissues of the eye
Thus, Mars projects the influence of disease and injury
directly onto the Moon, damaging the nourishing and functional aspects of
vision, particularly those connected with the left eye.
Two Afflicted Luminaries
A remarkable feature of the yoga is that both luminaries
are under direct malefic influence.

|

|

The Sun and Moon together govern illumination and
perception. In many classical works, they are regarded as the primary sources
of visual power. When both luminaries are simultaneously afflicted, the
likelihood of serious ocular disease increases considerably.
Formation of Two Disease Axes
The yoga creates two complementary axes:
First Axis
8th House (Saturn) → 2nd House (Sun)
- Chronic
disease
- Degeneration
- Direct
affliction of the eye and its kāraka
Second Axis
6th House (Mars) → 12th House (Moon)
- Disease
- Injury
- Direct
affliction of the left eye and the nourishing principle of vision
Together, these axes unite:
- Disease
(6th)
- Chronicity
(8th)
- Right
eye (2nd)
- Left
eye (12th)
- Natural
significators of vision (Sun and Moon)
This produces a comprehensive affliction of the visual
apparatus.
Why the Verse Ends with "क्षेत्रस्य दोषात्"
The phrase क्षेत्रस्य दोषात् ("according to the
affliction of the respective field or house") now assumes greater
significance. The author is not merely referring to the occupied houses but
also to the planetary influences operating upon them through dṛṣṭi.
Saturn's aspect intensifies the affliction of the Sun in the 2nd, while Mars'
aspect aggravates the Moon in the 12th. Consequently, the pathology varies with
the nature of the afflicting planet: Saturn tends toward chronic degeneration,
whereas Mars indicates inflammatory or traumatic damage.
Interpretative Conclusion
The elegance of this yoga lies in its structural design.
Saturn in the eighth does not remain confined to the house of chronic disease;
through its seventh aspect it directly afflicts the Sun in the second, the
natural significator of eyesight situated in the house governing the right eye.
Simultaneously, Mars in the sixth, the house of disease and injury, casts its
seventh aspect upon the Moon in the twelfth, the house associated with the left
eye and loss. Thus, both luminaries—the fundamental sources of visual
perception—come under direct malefic influence. The verse therefore describes
not four independent placements but a coordinated pattern in which disease,
chronicity, and direct affliction of both eyes combine to produce Andha Yoga,
making it one of the more logically constructed ocular yogas found in the
classical literature.
The Role of Mars in Andha Yoga
At first glance, Mars placed in the sixth house appears to
merely represent disease and inflammation. However, its role in this yoga is
considerably deeper.
In medical astrology, Mars governs the body's defensive
mechanisms, representing vitality, resistance to disease, inflammatory
responses, and the capacity to combat pathological processes. It is the planet
that mobilizes the body's protective forces whenever injury or infection
occurs. Consequently, Mars may be regarded as an astrological significator of immunity
and the body's protective response.
Mars is also closely associated with the sense of sight
and the optic pathway, particularly the transmission of visual impulses.
Vision depends not only upon healthy ocular structures but also upon the
integrity of the neural mechanisms that carry visual information to the brain.
An afflicted Mars may therefore indicate impairment arising from inflammation,
trauma, vascular compromise, or injury affecting these functional pathways.
In the present yoga, Mars occupies the sixth house,
the principal house of disease, injury, inflammation, and pathological
processes. From there it casts its seventh aspect upon the Moon in the
twelfth house, thereby extending the influence of disease to the house
traditionally associated with the left eye and loss. This aspect suggests that
the pathological process is not confined to a local disorder but has the
potential to undermine the functional integrity of vision.
Simultaneously, Mars represents the body's ability to resist
and repair tissue damage. When this protective influence itself becomes
afflicted by placement in the sixth house, the body's capacity to recover from
ocular injury or disease may be compromised. Thus, Mars contributes not only
the element of inflammation and tissue injury but also the weakening of the
body's natural defence and healing mechanisms.
Viewed alongside Saturn's aspect upon the Sun, the yoga
becomes remarkably coherent. Saturn produces chronic degeneration and
progressive impairment, while Mars introduces disease, inflammatory damage, and
diminished physiological resistance. Together, these influences create a
powerful combination capable of producing severe ocular pathology, thereby
explaining the classical designation of Andha Yoga.
