Why only Mars, Jupiter and Saturn carry special aspects: a plausible explanation

Why only Mars, Jupiter and Saturn carry special aspects: a plausible explanation

In Parashari astrology, every planet aspects the 7th house from where it sits. Only Mars (4th and 8th), Jupiter (5th and 9th) and Saturn (3rd and 10th) get additional full aspects. Parashara states this as a rule and doesn't explain it, but a pattern in the planets themselves offers a reasonable explanation.

The Luminaries: Sun and Moon
The Sun and Moon are the two luminaries, the sources of light in the chart. Each owns just one sign (Leo and Cancer), so each rules a single domain. They hold a single, full aspect on the 7th house, directly opposite them.

Mercury and Venus: rooted around the Sun
Both own two signs, yet they have only the 7th aspect. The reason may be their orbits. Mercury never strays more than about 28° from the Sun, and Venus never more than about 47°. They are tethered to the Sun and always found in its neighbourhood, so their reach stays limited.

Mars, Jupiter and Saturn: two signs and a free orbit
These planets own two signs each and can stand at any angle from the Sun, up to opposition. They are neither bound to the Sun nor limited to a single domain, and they alone receive extended aspects.

Putting it together
Neither factor explains the pattern alone:

  • Ownership alone fails, because Mercury and Venus own two signs but have no special aspects.
  • Freedom from the Sun alone fails, because the Moon ranges freely but has only the 7th aspect.

Only planets with both a double domain and an untethered orbit get extended reach, which gives exactly Mars, Jupiter and Saturn.

A note of caution
This is an interpretive reading, not the classical reason. Parashara gives the rule without justification, Jaimini uses sign-based aspects instead, and the scheme doesn't account for Rahu and Ketu, who own no signs yet are given 5th and 9th aspects by some authorities. It is best treated as a thoughtful way to remember the pattern, not a proof.
