Dagdha Rāśis (Burnt Signs) and Their Use in Predictive Astrology
Understanding the Concept
In Vedic astrology, Tithi represents the angular distance between the Sun and Moon. Since the zodiac comprises 360°, and there are 30 tithis in a lunar month, each tithi spans 12°.
The word Tithi literally implies "reduction" because it is calculated from the difference between the longitudes of the Sun and Moon, whereas Yoga is based upon their addition.
Ancient astrologers assigned certain signs to each tithi that become weak, afflicted, or "burnt." These are known as:
Dagdha Rāśi (Burnt Sign)
Śūnya Rāśi (Void Sign)
Zero Rāśi
Planets occupying these signs often lose some of their capacity to deliver favorable results. Likewise, houses falling in these signs may not fully manifest their promised outcomes unless strongly supported by other factors.
The concept is particularly useful in:
Natal astrology
Muhūrta (electional astrology)
Transit analysis
Prashna (horary astrology)

Chaturdaśī: Four signs become Dagdha instead of two.
Effects of Dagdha Rāśis
When a planet occupies a Dagdha sign corresponding to the native's birth tithi:
Benefic Planets
May experience:
Reduced capacity to bestow benefic results.
Delayed realisation of promised blessings.
Internal dissatisfaction despite external success.
Malefic Planets
May become:
More troublesome.
More prone to creating obstacles.
Less controllable during their daśā and transit periods.
House Effects
If important houses fall in Dagdha signs:
Their significations may suffer interruptions.
Results may come after a struggle.
The native may feel a sense of incompleteness regarding matters of that house.
For example:
10th house in Dagdha sign → professional frustrations.
7th house in Dagdha sign → relationship dissatisfaction.
4th house in Dagdha sign → domestic unrest or lack of emotional contentment.
Weekday Dagdha Rāśis (Vāra Dagdha Rāśis)
Classical Muhūrta texts also assign burnt signs to weekdays.
| Weekday | Dagdha Sign |
|---|---|
| Sunday | Libra |
| Monday | Scorpio |
| Tuesday | Capricorn |
| Wednesday | Sagittarius |
| Thursday | Aquarius |
| Friday | Pisces |
| Saturday | Aries |
Application
When important activities are initiated while:
Ascendant falls in the weekday's Dagdha sign, or
Moon occupies the Dagdha sign,
The undertaking may face:
Delays
Obstacles
Repeated revisions
Unsatisfactory results
This rule is especially observed in Muhūrta.
Dagdha Nakṣatras
Similar to Dagdha Rāśis, certain Nakṣatras become afflicted according to the weekday.
These are called Vāra Dagdha Nakṣatras.
| Weekday | Dagdha Nakṣatra |
|---|---|
| Sunday | Bharanī |
| Monday | Chitra |
| Tuesday | Uttarāṣāḍhā |
| Wednesday | Dhaniṣṭhā |
| Thursday | Uttaraphālgunī |
| Friday | Jyeṣṭhā |
| Saturday | Revatī |
Effects
Activities commenced under a weekday's Dagdha Nakṣatra may encounter:
Delayed completion
Wasteful expenditure
Lack of permanence
Failure to achieve intended objectives
For Muhūrta purposes, these combinations are generally avoided for:
Marriage
Commencing business
Housewarming
Travel
Signing important agreements
How to Use Dagdha Rāśis in Natal Astrology
The principle becomes especially useful when examining:
1. Ascendant Lord
If the Lagna lord occupies a Dagdha sign:
Self-confidence may fluctuate.
Success often comes after repeated effort.
The native may undervalue their achievements.
2. Moon
Moon in the Dagdha sign may indicate:
Emotional dissatisfaction.
Difficulty feeling fulfilled.
Inner restlessness despite outward gains.
3. Daśā Analysis
Results of a planet occupying a Dagdha sign often manifest as:
Partial fulfillment.
Interrupted gains.
Success mixed with frustration.
4. Transit Analysis
When major transit planets activate natal Dagdha signs:
Dormant karmas become active.
Hidden weaknesses surface.
Reassessment of life direction may occur.
Important Caution
Dagdha Rāśis are modifiers, not independent determinants of destiny.
A planet occupying a Dagdha sign can still produce excellent results if:
Exalted.
In one's own sign.
Strong in Shadbala.
Supported by beneficial aspects.
Well placed in divisional charts.
Likewise, a weak planet in a Dagdha sign may become considerably more problematic.
Therefore, Dagdha Rāśis should always be judged alongside:
Strength of the planet,
House ownership,
Yogas,
Aspects,
Vargas,
Daśās and transits.
Used properly, the Dagdha principle often explains why certain promised results materialise only partially, arrive late, or fail to provide lasting satisfaction despite apparent success.
