Literal Translation:
- सुहृत-रिप-परकीय-स्वक्षं
तुङ्गस्थितानां
The effects of planets in houses of friends (सुहृत), enemies (रिप), others (परकीय), own sign (स्व), or exaltation (तुङ्गस्थ) - फलम्
अनुपरिचिन्त्यं
Are to be carefully considered (अनुपरिचिन्त्यं = not judged superficially) - लग्न-देह-आदि-भावः
In reference to the Lagna (Ascendant) and other body-related houses (like 1st, etc.) - समुपचर्या-विपत्ती
सौम्य-पापेषु सत्यः
Results are judged by whether the planet is benefic (सौम्य) or malefic (पाप) and by the nature of the house (upachaya = growth, vipatti = downfall) - कथयति
विपरीतं ऋफ-षष्ठ-अष्टमेषु
But in the " the 6th, 8th, and 12th houses, one should understand the results to be the opposite." the results may be reversed.
Interpretative Translation:
The results of planets—whether they occupy the signs of friends, enemies,
others, their own, or exaltation—must be judged carefully, especially when they
are placed in houses starting from the Lagna (ascendant) that concern the
physical body.
The actual effects are influenced by whether the planet is benefic or
malefic, and whether it is in an Upachaya house (3rd, 6th, 10th, 11th —
considered growth-oriented) or Vipatti (Dushtana) houses (6th, 8th, 12th
— associated with trouble).
However, in the 3rd, 6th, and 8th houses, the usual rules may
reverse—i.e., malefics may give good results, and benefics may
suffer or give weaker results. This is the essence of the
"Vipareeta" concept.
Key Astrological Concepts in the Verse:
- House and
Sign Consideration:
- Own,
friendly, or exalted sign placements are usually favorable.
- Enemy or
neutral signs need deeper judgment.
- Benefic vs
Malefic:
- Normally,
benefics (Jupiter, Venus, Mercury, Moon) give good results.
- Malefics
(Saturn, Mars, Sun, Rahu, Ketu) tend to give challenging results.
- Upachaya
Houses (3, 6, 10, 11):
- These
houses improve over time. Malefics tend to do well here.
- Dushtana
Houses (6, 8, 12):
- Generally
associated with suffering, debts, diseases, etc.
- Vipareeta
Raja Yoga Principle:
- Malefics
in 6th, 8th, or 12th (especially if lords of other Dushtanas) can result
in sudden positive turnarounds, strength in adversity, or
unexpected gains.
Practical Interpretation for a Chart:
- A malefic
planet in the 3rd, 6th, or 8th house may bestow strength, courage,
victory over enemies, or longevity.
- A benefic
in those same houses may lose its natural strength or become
ineffective, unless supported by other favorable conditions.
- The results
of exaltation or own sign do not always give their typical benefits
in these houses.
Thus, house context overrides even dignity (exaltation, own sign) to
some degree, especially in the mentioned houses.
