Dhatu, Moola & Jeeva Divisions of planets and diseases.

Dhatu, Moola & Jeeva Divisions of planets and diseases.

Dhatu, Moola & Jeeva Divisions of planets
In chapter 3 of Brihat Parashara Hora Shashtra, the sage Parashara has provided a very detailed description of planets and their respective characters. The humanization of the planets is done in order to have an in-depth understanding of the role and activity of the planets in our life.

In verse number 47 - the sage Parashara has classified the planets on the basis of Dhatu, Moola, and Jeeva.
Dhatu means metal and is basically related to the materialistic role of planets in the birth chart.

Moola means the roots, and Moola division is related to the existence of the self in the world.

Jeeva means living beings and is basically related to the relationships of the native.
The Planets Rahu, Mars, Saturn, and the Moon are lords of Dhatu in the birth chart.

The life-giving Planet Sun and the Venus are the lords of Moola.

Remaining planets viz. Mercury, Jupiter and Ketu rule over Jeeva.

Dhatu are basically the body tissues which are responsible for the functioning of the systems and organs and the structure of the body. Each of the Dhatus is built out of a previous one and they develop on the nourishment that comes from the digestive system. They are basically the result of the action of catalysts that convert one tissue to another. The sole purpose of metabolism is to assemble proper 'Dhatus' together in synchronization with which they carry out their role as the field of physiological activity.

Seven Dhatus Of Ayurveda

Dhatu is originally a Sanskrit word which means 'that which enters into the formation of the body'; the root Daa means 'support' or 'that which bears'.It is thus said to be the base of growth and survival. According to Ayurveda, there are seven basic types of dhatus in the human body. This seven basic dhatus are composed of five mahabhutas. These dhatus remain inside the human body in a proper equilibrium so that the body can function properly. It is said that any kind of disturbance or imbalance in their equilibrium causes ailments and diseases. The seven dhatus are as follows:

Rasa (Plasma)

Rasa literally means 'sap' or 'juice'. The primary function of 'Rasa' is to strengthen 'rakta' (blood) and provide nourishment. Basically, the tissue fluids consist of lymph and blood plasma. Accessory tissues are breast milk and the menstrual blood.

Rakta (Blood)

Rakta Dhatu is said to be constituted from the metabolic refinement of the Rasa Dhatu. The primary function of the Rakta Dhatu is the nourishment of the body. It is also said to be the preserve of life.

Mansa (Muscles)

It is formed from the rasa and rakta dhatu and said to be the basic cover of bone and structure of the body.

Meda (Fat)

Meda Dhatu is the finer part of the mansa dhatu that is also known as fatty tissue. They keep the lubrication between the various body organs and help the body in maintaining the right internal temperature.

Asthi (Bone)

Asthi i.e bones are the finer essence of the Meda Dhatu, which are converted into the most solid form of the Dhatus. They give the basic structure to the body.

Majja (Bone marrow)

Majja is the finer essence of the Asthi Dhatu. It is basically a semi-solid substance, yellow and red in color. Its primary function is filling the bone. It is also found inside the brain and spinal cord.

Shukra (Reproductive fluid or Semen)

Sukra is produced from the most refined essence of the Bone Marrow. It is the cause of Ojas, which is actually the essence of all the seven Dhatus. The Shukra is responsible for the vitality and energy of the body.

Epilepsy In medical astrology
Image result for epilepsy
Epilepsy is a common and diverse set of chronic neurological disorders characterized by seizures. It is a paroxysmal behavioral spell generally caused by an excessive disorderly discharge of cortical nerve cells of the brain and can range from clinically undetectable (electrographic seizures) to convulsions. Some definitions of epilepsy require that seizures be recurrent and unprovoked but others require only a single seizure combined with brain alterations which increase the chance of future seizures.[5] In many cases a cause cannot be identified; however, factors that are associated include brain trauma, strokes, brain cancer, and drug and alcohol misuse among others.
Epileptic seizures result from abnormal, excessive or hypersynchronous neuronal activity in the brain About 50 million people worldwide have epilepsy, and nearly 80% of epilepsy occurs in developing countries. Epilepsy becomes more common as people age. The onset of new cases occurs most frequently in infants and the elderly Epileptic seizures may occur in recovering patients as a consequence of brain surgery.[

Epilepsy is usually controlled, but not cured, with medication. However, more than 30% of people with epilepsy do not have seizure control even with the best available medications. Surgery may be considered in difficult cases. Not all epilepsy syndromes are lifelong – some forms are confined to particular stages of childhood. Epilepsy should not be understood as a single disorder, but rather as syndromic with vastly divergent symptoms, all involving episodic abnormal electrical activity in the brain and numerous seizures.

What Is Epilepsy?

Epilepsy is a brain disorder in which clusters of nerve cells, or neurons, in the brain sometimes signal abnormally. Neurons normally generate electrochemical impulses that act on other neurons, glands, and muscles to produce human thoughts, feelings, and actions. In epilepsy, the normal pattern of neuronal activity becomes disturbed, causing strange sensations, emotions, and behavior or sometimes convulsions, muscle spasms, and loss of consciousness. During a seizure, neurons may fire as many as 500 times a second, much faster than normal. In some people, this happens only occasionally; for others, it may happen up to hundreds of times a day

Astrological combinations of epilepsy as laid down in classics.

Epilepsy may be on account of Tridosha. This may arise on account of dining at odd hours, overeating, deficient food or improper food habits. These details can be gleaned from ascendant and Moon and Ascendant lord. Food habits can be gleaned from the 2nd house and 6th house.

According to Saravali, a person may suffer on account of Epilepsy.

(a) If Saturn is in the ascendant with Rahu or Moon with the lord of 6th, 8th or 12th house.

(b) Moon in the ascendant with Rahu and aspected by Saturn, Mars or lord of 6th house.

(c) Mercury and Rahu in the ascendant associated or aspected by the lord of 6th house.

(d) Venus with Rahu in 7th aspected by Mars or Saturn or the lord of the 6th house.

(e) Jupiter aspected by the lord of 6th, 8th, 12th and occupying 6th, 8th or 12th house.

(f) Lord of the ascendant in 6th, 8th or 12th house and is associated with Rahu, Mars or Saturn.

In addition to these, it is also observed that affliction of Moon is also responsible for Epilepsy.

Amongst the various planets, Rahu is the most dreaded one for the Moon. He is even called Chandra Vimardana. On the other hand, the Moon is the significator of emotions and consciousness. If the Moon as lord of the 4th be in the 6th, 8th or 12th and it falls under the evil influence of Rahu by conjunction or aspect, etc. and there be no benefic influence on the Moon, the emotions and consciousness are adversely affected, giving rise to a dreaded affliction known as Epilepsy. As lord of the 4th, the Moon will be absolute representative of the emotional side of mind and /, therefore, Moon's affliction in the manner described above will definitely cause a serious disease of the mind and consciousness.

Sixth lord conjunct Lagna lord and 8th lord, 7th and 2nd lord and Marak mars. Mercury combust, moon conjunct Saturn in 10th, Combust and afflicted mercury is under aspect from 4th and 5th lord Saturn, Rahu from the 8th house. Lord of 64th navamsa is mercury and lord of 22nd drekana is Saturn. Whenever mercury is combust and under the heavy malefic influence it calls for disease related to nervous disorder specifically if mercury own or is in any of dushsthana houses ie 6th,8th or 12th.
Whenever Jupiter, Mercury, and moon are under the malefic influence the conditions related to head related problems becomes a possibility. Connection of Jupiter and Mars also points towards mental or brain related problem the hint of this combination is provided in Sarvarth Chintamani.

Mrityu Bhaga

Mrityu Bhaga or critical degrees.

Mrityu Bhaga

This article has 3 parts that deal with –
1) Mrityu Bhaga for Signs
2) Mrityu Bhaga for Planets
3) Mrityu Bhaga for Nakshatras
Mrityu Bhaga = Death causing degree (in the zodiac circle – i.e. ecliptic)
1) Mirtyu Bhaga for Rasi or Lagna
This is generally applicable to all signs and all planets.
“Here (referring to Skanda hora quote on the same) the word ‘Antha’ (end) means ‘Mrityu bhaga’.  The Mrityu bhagas for the ascendant are the 1st deg in Aries, 9th deg Taurus, 21st deg in Gemini, 22nd deg Cancer, 25th deg in Leo, 2nd deg in Virgo, 4th deg in Libra, 23rd deg in Scorpio, 18th deg  in Sagittarius, 20th deg in Capricorn, 24th deg in Aquarius and 10th deg in Pisces. They have all been mentioned to be different from each other for each of the twelve signs beginning with Aries.”
(Brihat Prajapatyam, Rf. Hridya Patha)
Most of the sages and acharyas are of the opinion that the above Mrityubhagas are essentially connected to the signs themselves and  should be applied for all planets. Since Mrityubhaga is related to the sign, which planet is under consideration is not relevant.
2) Mrityubhaga of Planets
But Brihat Prajapaty is the of the opinion that, in general the above statement is correct, but special Mrityubhaga should be considered specially for Moon. Kausika hora moves one step further in this deviation of connecting Mrityubhaga with planets instead of signs itself, and proposes Mrityubhaga for all planets in all signs!
Mrityu Bhaga for  Moon
Brihat Prajapatya tells us that the Mrityu Bhaga for Moon in signs are not the same as above, and proceeds to quote the Mrityu bhagas for Moon as given below.
“26th deg in Aries, 12th deg in Taurus, 13th deg in Gemini, 25th deg in Leo, 11th deg in Virgo, 26th deg in Libra, 14th deg in Scorpio, 13th deg in Sagittarius, 25th deg in Capricorn, 5th deg in Aquarius, 12th deg in Pisces are the Mrityubhagas for Moon. The mrityu bhagas of Moon have been mentioned in this way for signs beginning with Aries. For other planets some (i.e. the sages like Garga, Sounaka etc) say that the mrityu bhagas are identical with ascendant while some others (like Kausika etc) say that they are different from it.”
(Brihat Prajapatyam, Rf. Hridya Patha)
These Mrityu bahagas for Moon is agreed upon by many sages - such as Daksha, Viswamitra etc, and is therefore can be considered as authentic.
Mrityu Bhaga for Other Planets
Here Daksha tell us that for all other planets Mrityu bhaga told for Lagna itself can be used. But Sage viswamitra the author of Kausika hora is of the opinion that Mrityu bhaga that should be ascribed/considered for every planet is different. In Kausika hora Viswamitra provides us with the list of Mrityu bhagas for all planets.
It is interesting to note that Viswamitra provided mrityu bhaga not only for the 3 major malefics (Sun, Mars, Saturn) but for other malefics such as Rahu, Ketu and Gulika and even for the benefics such as Mercury, Venus and Jupiter. That is, Kausika hora provides us with Mrityubhaga for all planets.  All those slokas from Kausika hora are also quoted below.
Planetary Mrityubhaga is a deviation from the original concept of Mrityubhaga. This deviation was  originated by Daksha (Brihat Prajapatya) and made intensified by Kausika Viswamitra (Kausika Hora).
Mrityubhaga opinion expressed by Sage Kausika is tabulated below -

3) Mrityu Bhaga of Nakshatras (Nakshatra Mrihtyu bhaga)
Nakshatra Mrityu bhaga: This is a concept originally presented by Sounaka (Sounaka hora).
One thing to remember about Nakshatra Mrityubhaga is that, here it is not the degree, but the Muhurata corresponding to that Nal (Nakshatra dina) is what is considered as Mrityubhaga. Since every Nakshtra dina will have 30 Nakshatra Muhurtas (1 Muhurta = 2 nadika; 30 Nakshatra Muhurta = 60 nadika = 1 ahoratra) the number given here could he any number less than 30 associated with every Nakshatra.

“This is the sequence during the Shukla paksha. During the Krishna paksha the sequence is opposite. Thus the mrityu bhagas have been mentioned from constellations beginning with Ashwini.”
 (Sounaka Hora, Rf. HP)
This also points to the fact that Nakshatra Muhurta should be calculated, starting from the beginning of Nakshatra (Nal) similar to Dasa-Antara, instead of  the current system of connecting Muhurta with Day and night.
